During our renovation process we have been committed to becoming an earth friendly resort and have significantly reduced our carbon footprint since 2020. Our old sewer treatment plant has been re-purposed to hold reclaimed water for our new irrigation system and is used to irrigate our beautiful and extensive landscaping that includes many drought resistant plants and trees that are native to the Florida Keys.
Energy Efficient Guestrooms
We have installed a new, mini split, energy efficient air conditioning system in all of our guest rooms and suites. These units have automatic thermostats that detect when people leave the room for better energy efficiency. Upon guest departure, the front desk will be able to adjust the thermostat via web-based technology to keep the guest rooms energy efficient.
We have added recyclable and regular trash bins throughout the resort to help curb the growing trash problem in the Keys.
Energy Efficient Laundry
Our old vent style doors and windows have been replaced throughout the resort with new “hurricane” doors and windows. This will allow improved energy savings in our guest rooms, restaurants, office and reception buildings.
The Islander Resort boasts a new state of the art laundry system. This energy efficient system is designed to conserve water usage as well as using a cold-water cleaning system that will greatly reduce the amount of hot water. The newly installed dryers provide increased energy efficiency with faster drying times as well and their self-cleaning lint filters.
Biodegradable Products
The restaurant and bars will be using paper “to-go” containers, paper straws and earth friendly biodegradable products that will allow us to be almost plastic free. Our recycled, biodegradable hot cup with eco-friendly holder and lid along with wood stick stirrer adds to our earth friendly promise. Our dining room tables are designed to be table cloth free to help conserve water, which will release less detergents into our environment
Recycled Materials
Many green upgrades have been included in our luxury rooms and suites. Soap dispensers feature Paul Mitchel Tea Tree products and all amenity products are made of recycled materials. Guests are encouraged to use towels and linens for more than one use. The combined recycle/garbage cans come equipped with a liner so there is not a need for a plastic bag. Each room will provide a hand held, commercial steamer thus reducing the need for an iron and ironing board. Other room products include biodegradable laundry bags.
Energy Saving Features
The resort will have numerous water filling stations throughout the property to help reduce the use of plastic bottles.
All new LED light bulbs and fixtures will be used throughout the resort.
The installation of solar panels on numerous buildings will result in an energy savings of 44%. This extensive undertaking will put the Islander Resort on the map as one of the most successful “Green Hotels” in the Florida Keys.
